Manatees will chew on the bark of trees, moss on anchor or buoy lines, grass from nearby lawns, and even dead fish when they are hungry enough.
This female manatee was going to town on this tree that had fallen in the water, for over an hour. She would even roll over and keep chomping while upside down!
I have seen one with a dead fish in his mouth and confirmed later that they do in fact eat them sometimes.
